Notice biographique
After marrying Sir James B. Bucknall Estcourt, a British topographical painter, in 1837, Caroline (née Pole Crew) accompanied her husband on his postings in Canada (1838-39 and 1844-47) and overseas. She often sketched the people she met and places she visited. Among her sketches is a rare nineteenth-century depiction of an African-Canadian completed near Niagara Falls whom Estcourt described as "a great friend" on the back of the portrait. In the 1850s she traveled to the Crimea during the British campaign with her sister, Marieanne, to join her husband who was suffering from cholera. Although she nursed him diligently, he died and Caroline was made a KCB's (Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath) widow in 1856. She is known for her Canadian views, especially her Quebec winter scenes. Some of her sketches were subsequently lithographed, and most are in the collection of the Archives of Canada.
