Notice biographique
A professional artist and an art teacher, Margaret Kitto moved to Victoria with her family at the age of twenty after studying art in England. From 1922, she operated the Deco Art Studio with fellow artist Lillian Sweeney. Together, they produced and exhibited lampshades, murals, plaster casts, table runners, postcards, and framed souvenirs. She supplemented her income by teaching at the Sacred Heart Convent School, the Western Art Studio and, later on, evening courses organized by the school board. She also led sketching parties with Josephine Crease. Active in the Island Arts and Crafts Society, she was on the executive committee from 1911-17, served as second vice president 1918-19, and vice president in 1925. Kitto worked primarily in watercolour, and her work can be found in the collections of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the British Columbia Provincial Archives.
