Notice biographique
The youngest sister of artists Marie-Cécile and Simone Mary Bouchard, Édith came to painting later in life. All three sisters were known for their depictions of the rural Charlevoix region and traditional Québecois domestic scenes. Following Simone Mary's death and Marie-Cécile's entrance into a convent, Édith Bouchard took up the latter's paints and brushes in 1947, in order to please her mother. The following year she won fourth prize in a Quebec City exhibition. Her work was shown at the Dominion Gallery in 1952 along with that of her sisters. Although naive in style, Édith Bouchard's canvasses reflect an interest in representing furnishings and cultural customs in detail, and her bright palette and bold treatment of everyday subjects (usually involving women) garnered her attention from modernists. Later in life she also entered a convent.
