Notice biographique
A celebrated artist during the first decades of the twentieth century, Minnie Kallmeyer was best known for her Canadian and English landscapes, from fishing scenes to quaint cottages. She was born in the United States but came to Toronto as a young girl. She studied under F. McGillivray Knowles at the Central Ontario School of Art and also pursued private study under J. W. Beatty. Kallmeyer later went to Europe to continue her training, studying in Munich under Walter Thor, and in Paris with Richard Miller. Upon her return to Canada, she began exhibiting with the Ontario Society of Artists, eventually joining this association in 1922. Kallmeyer was recognized as one of Canada's most accomplished women artists by Newton Mactavish in 1925, and her ability to evoke the many moods and colours of the Canadian landscape was remarked upon by the Globe and Mail during an exhibition of her work at the Eaton's Fine Art Galleries in 1933. One of her works, entitled "Hartung's Wharf, Boothbay Harbour, Maine" can be found in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada.
