Daughter of F.S. Clench, a cabinet maker in Cobourg Ontario, Harriet Kane (nee Clench) painted figures, landscapes, and flowers in watercolours and oils. In 1853, she married the painter Paul Kane. With her help, Paul Kane turned his journals into a book, entitled "Wanderings of An Artist Among the Indians of North America." Awarded several prizes for her work, Kane was active from 1853 to 1892, and showed her work in the Upper Canada Provincial exhibition in 1849.
