Notice biographique
Thérèse Lecomte was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, in 1916. With musicians for parents, she was encouraged early on to practice arts and at age nineteen applied to the École des beaux-arts in Montreal where she remained until the 1940s. She worked in a wide variety of disciplines and media including interior decorating, industrial design, advertising, graphic art, ceramics, enamel, charcoal, oils, watercolours, jewelry making, sculpture, engraving and metal work. Lecomte began teaching in 1941 at the École préparatoire des beaux-arts and advanced to become its Director in 1944. Students of note include Maurice Savoie, Clemence DesRochers and Michel Goulet. In 1964 she founded, with Claude Lafleur, the Association pour l'avancement des arts in Sherbrooke. In 2003 Lecomte was awarded the Prix du public for an alabaster sculpture "Maternité" in the Spring exhibition at the Sherbrooke Museum and in 2004 she was named Enseignante emerite de Sherbrooke by the Société St. Jean Baptiste.
