After studying with her father Sir Wyly Grier, well-known portrait painter, Stella Grier studied at the Art Students League in New York, St. Martins' School, Goldsmith College and the New Cross School in London, England. On her return to Canada she became a freelance commercial artist in Toronto, where she worked at the T. Eaton's Store, and in Boston. She later returned to England where she taught children's fashion drawing at the Carlton Studios in London. On her subsequent return to Canada, she taught at King's Hall, Compton, Quebec and later at the Department of Archaeology of the Royal Ontario Museum. She also illustrated children's school books. She chiefly worked in pastels but also did some oil painting. Her work has been exhibited in London, the United States, South America and in Canada. In 1930 she was elected an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy.
