SULLIVAN, Françoise

Naissance
Montreal, Quebec, 1925
Notice biographique
An artist of astonishing versatility and innovation, Françoise Sullivan is one of Canada's most celebrated visual and performance artists. As a child, Sullivan showed considerable artistic ambition, and was enrolled in art and dance classes. From 1934-45, she studied classical dance with Gérald Crevier, as well as painting at the Hochelaga Convent (1939) and visual art at the École des Beaux-arts de Montréal (1940-45). Sullivan, however, was disappointed by the traditional approach of these schools, and was eager to experiment. In 1941, she met the radical abstract painter Paul-Émile Borduas and became associated with the Automatistes, exhibiting with them and signing their 1948 manifesto "Refus global," to which she contributed the essay "La Danse et l'espoir." In 1945, she left for New York to study dance with Franzinska Boas, Martha Graham, and Louis Horst. Returning to Montreal in 1947, Sullivan continued to perform original choreographies until 1954, despite her new family responsibilities: she married painter Paterson Ewen in 1949 and gave birth to 4 sons in 10 years. Sullivan devoted the 60s to sculpture, studying welding under Armand Vaillancourt and at Lachine's École des arts et métiers, and wood, iron, and plaster sculpture at the EBAM. She executed work for Expo 67 and experimented with Plexiglass. In 1970, she made the first of many trips to Europe and began executing conceptual projects inspired by her travels. Sullivan returned to painting in the 80s, often taking Greek mythology as her subject. A retrospective at the Musée du Québec followed in 1993, after which time Sullivan's works became increasingly abstract. Honours awarded throughout her career include the Prix du Québec (1963), the Prix Borduas (1987), membership in the Order of Canada (2001), the Governor-General's Award in Visual and Media Arts (2005), and the Gershon Iskowitz Prize (2008). Sullivan is a professor at Concordia University and continues to create new choreographies.
