Notice biographique
Lily Inglis received her first training at the age of eighteen in the form of a six-year architectural apprenticeship in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. This was followed by two years at the Edinburgh School of Architecture in Scotland, where she received a Diploma in Architecture in 1952; she also became a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects that same year. Inglis was awarded a traveling scholarship that enabled her to go to Scandinavia, Italy and the United States to study post-war architecture. Inglis then moved to London, England, where she was employed with the firm Bridgewater & Shepard while she undertook a certificate in landscape design from University College, London University, which she obtained in 1957. In 1959, her husband was offered a teaching position at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, and the couple moved to Canada. Inglis completed a practical training period with Kingston architect Wilfred Sorensen between 1962 and 1963. She was admitted to the Ontario Association of Architects in 1963. Inglis ran her practice out of her home (while raising her children) until 1984, when she established Inglis & Downey Architects with Bruce Downey. She is perhaps most well known for her work on heritage projects in Kingston, which have been recognized provincially and nationally. (Thanks to Alexis Lenk for the research on Lily Inglis.)
