- A widely-travelled and highly skilled painter, Muriel Boulton worked in both watercolours and oils, and is especially renowned for her portraits. Her education took place in Europe, beginning at the Herkomer School in Bushey, England, under Hubert von Herkomer. In 1907, she moved to Paris, France, and continued her training under Christian Krohg and Emile Renaud at the Academie Colarossi. Boulton was known to be in Quebec City from c.1908-12, but she spent a great deal of time abroad, taking painting trips to France, Italy, and the U.K. While in Canada, she exhibited with the Royal Canadian Academy and at the Spring Shows of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The artist returned to England in 1918 and resided at Barton-on-Sea until her death. Her portrait of a man playing chess, entitled "The Chess Problem," was acquired by the National Gallery of Canada in 1908.
