Notice biographique
In 1895 Sipprell moved to Buffalo, New York, where she was introduced to photography in the portrait studio of her brother Francis James Sipprell. While working as a studio assistant, Sipprell learned the technical and aesthetic aspects of photography and eventually became a partner in business. Early in her career Sipprell experimented with a number of photographic processes, photographing the landscape around Buffalo in bromoil, gum, carbon, platinum prints and autochrome color prints. Although not a member, Sipprell exhibited numerous works with the Buffalo Camera Club between 1910 and 1913 and was awarded a number of prizes. It was here that she attracted the attention of influential art and photography critic Sadakichi Hartmann. In 1915, Sipprell moved to New York City where she opened her own photographic studio in Greenwich Village and worked as a contract photographer for the Ethical Culture School. Sipprell was a renowned portraitist, photographing some of the most famous icons of her time including Alfred Stieglitz, Robert Frost and Eleanor Roosevelt. Sipprell is known as one of the foremost American pictorial photographers, capturing the land in dreamlike images. She also applied this aesthetic approach to her portraits and still lifes. In 1937 Sipprell moved to Manchester, Vermont, where she continued to work and exhibit until her death in 1975.
