- After training at the Technische Hochschule in Austria, Helga Plumb moved to Toronto in 1959. She entered the second year of architecture at the University of Toronto, where she received a BArch (1963) and Master of Architecture in Urban Design (1967). Plumb was an adjunct associate professor at the University of Waterloo, Ontario (1981-2), and a visiting professor at the Technical University of Nova Scotia, Halifax (1985-6). As a practicing architect she worked at Diamond and Clark, Edmonton; Sasaki Dawson & DeMay, Watertown, Massachusetts; Shore and Moffat, Toronto; Fairfield + DuBois, Toronto. Plumb was partner in the DuBois Plumb Partnership, Toronto from 1980 until her retirement in 2001. Social interaction expressed through the medium of architecture is one of the recurring themes in Plumb’s projects. Her notable designs include: Joseph Shepard Building, North York (OMRC Award of Excellence 1978, Low Energy Building Design Award of Excellence 1980), Tom Longboat Junior Public School (Award of Merit 1981), Scaramouche Restaurant, Toronto, Oaklands Condominium, Toronto (Canadian Architect Design Award 1978, Canadian Architect Year Book Award for Excellence 1978, Silver Hexagon International Award of Excellence 1980, Ontario Association of Architects Design Award 1983, Governor General’s Medal for Architecture 1983), Souris Hospital, Prince Edward Island (Nova Scotia Association of Architects Award of Merit 1988, AIA Honorable Mention for Health Facilities Design). The Partnership’s most prestigious commission was the Canadian Embassy in Beijing (1979-1989). (I. Puchalski)
