Notice biographique
A student at the Ontario School of Art, at the Art Students League in New York with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri, and at the New York School of Design, Emily Louise Elliott was best known in Canada for her painted figures, landscapes and flowers in oil, and for her work as a graphic designer. She received many newspaper and magazine commissions for her fashion designs, and sketched fashions for Eaton's and Simpson's catalogues. In addition, she wrote a regular column on boats and boating for the Toronto Star, and was known as a composer of songs and as a lecturer on a variety of art topics. An active exhibitor at the Royal Canadian Academy (1898-1932), the Ontario Society of Artists (1899-1925), the Women's Art Association of Canada, and frequently at the Canadian National Exhibition, in her position as founding chair of the Women's Committee of the Canadian National Exhibition, she has been credited with the design of the now-demolished Women's Building. She was also a member of the Women's Press Club, the Women's Musical Club, and the Toronto Heliconian Club. Many of her works hang in Victoria College, Emmanuel College, St. Hilda's College, the School of Nursing, University of Toronto, Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the Toronto Women's Press Club. (JA)
