Notice biographique
The daughter of Lieutenant-Governor A.G. Jones, Bannerman studied in Halifax with Forshaw Day before going to Paris where she studied with Auguste Feyen-Perrin and Edouard Krug. She also visited the Impressionist exhibitions and was one of the first North Americans to incorporate aspects of Impressionism into her own paintings. "Le Jardin d'hiver," one of her submissions to the 1883 Salon, is the first Canadian subject ever to be shown in that venue. She also maintained a studio at Pont-Aven, and sold graphic works to illustrated magazines in London. Following her marriage to Hamlet Bannerman (1851-1895), she adopted a more English anecdotal style of painting. After her husband's death at Great Marlow, England, when rheumatoid arthritis curtailed her painting career, she published poetry. She was best known for her paintings of interiors. Bannerman was the first woman to be elected an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy (1882), following the charter membership of Charlotte Schreiber (1834-1922). She exhibited her work at the Royal Canadian Academy (1881- 83), the Paris Salon (1883 and 1884), the Royal Society of British Artists (1883-86) and (1889-90), the Royal Academy (1885, 1888-91) and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool (1885, 1888-91).
