- Until Florence Wyle and Frances Loring arrived in Toronto in 1912, Winnifred Kingsford was considered to be the only practicing woman sculptor in Canada. She began her studies in her hometown; first, at the Toronto Art School, under William Cruikshank and G.A. Reid, and then continuing her training at the Toronto Central Technical School, under Mr. Banks. Subsequently, she left for Paris to study with Antoine Bourdelle for five years. When Kingsford returned to Toronto, she taught art at Havergal College. In addition to more traditional sculpture, the artist also made vases and lamps in an effort to find a larger market for her work. Her piece entitled "Seated Woman" is in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada.
