MANAREY, Thelma Alberta

Born
Edmonton, Alberta, 1913
Died
Edmonton, Alberta, 1984
Biography synopsis
Manarey initially took private lessons in water-colour painting with Florence Mortimer and later studied portrait painting and printmaking with Henry G. Glyde in Calgary. She also attended courses at the Universities of Alberta and Washington extension programs. In the mid-1950s Manarey turned to abstract painting after attending summer sessions at the Banff School of Fine Arts where she studied with surrealist Charles Stegeman, as well as at Emma Lake working with artists including Kenneth Noland. From 1960 to 1972 Manarey's work focused on snow which she said served as a "natural" inspiration to her; she would apply many layers of white using positive and negative spaces. Manarey's print work, like her painting, dealt with organic forms, including serigraphs and lithographs. In 1968 she turned exclusively to etching. The works produced during this period were shown in a solo exhibition at the Edmonton Art Gallery as well as in St. John's, Newfoundland. Her works are held in the collections of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and Art Gallery of Alberta (Edmonton), Nickle Art Museum (Calgary) and the University of Alberta Art Collection.
