- An amateur quilter, Hazel Foster remained in and around Calgary for most of her life, which was largely spent looking after and caring for others. After attending nurses' college (1909-12), she worked for a physician in Carstairs while living at home in order to help her mother and care for her two brothers. Following her mother's death in 1931, she gave up nursing and took on the entire responsibility for the household and family. She then became a housekeeper to priests at St. Joseph's Rectory in 1945, retiring in 1950. Her quilts, while generally characterized by traditional patterns such as the Lone Star, often represent events in her life, such as the dates of her parents' deaths, and sometimes incorporate Asian-inspired motifs.
