Notice biographique
An active participant in the Montreal art scene during her career, Jane Corbus Luke came to Ottawa in 1904 following her marriage, and later settled in Montreal. At the Art Association of Montreal, she studied under William Brymner, G. Horne Russell, and Berthe DesClayes, eventually becoming a member of this society in 1926. After joining the Montreal West Women's Club and the American Women's Club, Luke would occasionally give illustrated lectures at their meetings. She included two oil paintings of French-Canadian cottages in an exhibition of the Women's Art Society at Montreal's Johnson Art Galleries in 1931, earning extensive praise in local papers. In particular, the charm of her subjects and the dazzling quality of light and colour in her canvasses were recognized.
