- Described as an early painter of Impressionist landscapes, the Hamilton artist Ottilie Palm Jost studied at the Hamilton School of Art and in summer schools in Old Lyme, Connecticut and Provincetown, Massachusetts with the American Impressionist painters of the time. A founding member of the Hamilton Art Students League (1898), she worked for many years as an illustrator for the Hamilton Herald, the Hamilton Spectator, and the forerunner of the Globe and Mail (Toronto). She was engaged to artist John Sloan Gordon (who later married Hortense Gordon), but they quarreled and Jost moved to Germany in 1911 and remained there for the rest of her life, except for a brief period in 1951 when she returned to Hamilton. While living in Germany she continued to show her work in Canadian exhibitions. While still living in Canada, in 1908 she painted a large mural of the Resurrection for St. John's Lutheran Church; the work remains in situ.
