Notice biographique
Marianna Schmidt studied at the Vancouver School of Art in the early 1960s after immigrating to Canada in 1961 to escape communist Hungary. She studied drawing and painting but focused on printmaking techniques including Japanese woodblock, lithography, and screen printing. The subject of her works underlined the personal losses of her family, themes of alienation and dislocation deploying neo-expressionistic and surrealistic approaches. In the 1980s, she returned to painting and the human figure, and in the 1990s she began working with xerography (photocopying) to make new images of collages constructed with found images and household junk. Schmidt received early recognition for her printmaking works including first prize at the Annual Calgary Graphics Exhibition and the Burnaby National Print Show in 1965, the Sterling Award at the Annual exhibition of the Society of Canadian Painters, Etchers and Engravers in 1966, and in 1967, she was one of six Canadians selected for the International Exhibition of Prints and Engravings in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia. In 1991 the Vancouver Art Gallery held a solo exhibition of Schmidt’s work, and in 2007 a retrospective was installed in three concurrent Vancouver exhibition spaces. Her works can be found in a number of major Canadian collections as well as international collections: Museum of Modern Art, New York, Stedelijk Museum in Belgium, Museum of Contemporary Art, Peru, Museum of Fine Arts, Venezuela, and the National Gallery of Australia.
