Sylvia Daoust studied at the Council of Arts & Manufactures (1915-1916) and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts (1923-1930), Montreal. She also did studies in France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Belgium, Germany and England. In 1929 her bronze head “Mon grand-pere” (1928) shared the first prize with work by Elizabeth Wyn Wood at the Willingdon Arts Competition. The same year she won a Quebec government scholarship for studying in France. There, she became familiar with the work of important French and English sculptors such as Rodin, Despiau, Bourdelle, and Mestrovic, among others. She also worked with Henri Charlier, a liturgical sculptor who influenced her future work. She taught drawing, anatomy and modeling at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Quebec (1930-1943) and later she become a professor of sculpture in wood and stone at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal (1943-1968). Her work was displayed in several exhibitions in Canada, the United States, and Italy and also in important retrospective shows at the Musée du Québec (1974), the Musée d'art de Saint-Laurent (1992) and the Musée des religions de Nicolet (1994). Sylvia Daoust’s murals, sculptures and monuments are located in significant places, including the l'Université de Montréal, the Montréal Botanical Gardens and the Monastery at St, Benoit de Lac. She was member of the Sculptors' Society of Canada (SSC) and she was an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy. In 1961 she won the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Allied Arts Medal. Her works are part of important private and public collections, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, Notre-Dame Basilica, the Québec Provincial Museum, IBM (Montreal) and many others. Sylvia Daoust died in Montreal in 2004 when she was 102 years old.
