Ellen Trider Lindsay was born in Saint John, New Brunswick in 1900. She studied with Elizabeth S. Nutt at the Nova Scotia College of Art, where she later taught. She also attended the Parson's School of Design in New York City and took summer art courses at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. She was a member of the Nova Scotia Society of Artists from 1939 until her death, serving as President (1945-45; 1951-52), Treasurer (1946-49) and Exhibition Secretary (1955). Lindsay exhibited with the Art Association of Montreal in 1942 and 1943. Her work has been shown with the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, with the Maritime Art Association, and in the Nova Scotia Department of Education Traveling Exhibitions. Lindsay passed away in 1962 in Halifax.
