Notice biographique
Ruth Wainwright was born in Nova Scotia in 1902. She studied at the Halifax Ladies’ College under Edith Smith. In 1953 she went to New York and studied at Hans Hofmann’s Provincetown school. This experience marked a major turning point in her career; she abandoned the realist tradition of watercolor painting and she began to explore the two-dimensional nature of the picture plane and to work with form and space by juxtaposing planes of color.
