Duff was a landscape and still life painter who worked in watercolour. painter who also painted everyday moments of her life from the lakeshore cottage on Georgian Bay as well as her Toronto studio. She studied with Lismer as a child at the Art Gallery of Toronto and later at the Women's Art Association at the same time also the Queen's University Art program in 1944 with Andre Bieler. From the fall 1944 to 1946 she studied at Central Technical School in Toronto where she was influenced by Doris McCarthy. She would add monotype and wood block printing to her repertoire. An active member of the watercolour society, she was engaged in organizing an exhibition exchange with the Japanese Watercolour Society. The McMichael Gallery acquired 200 works by Duff in 2022 and held an exhibition in 2023. This exhibition, which includes a carefully curated selection of these works, represents a small survey of Duff’s career. Her work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada[1] and the Royal Collection, as part of the Royal Collection Project. In 1959, she began working with Douglas Duncan at the Picture Loan Society, one of the most influential galleries in Canada In 1977, she was awarded the Queen`s Jubilee Medal; in 1984, she received an Honorary Award from the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour. In 2007, the Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery held a retrospective of MacIntosh Duff’s work.
