Notice biographique
Yulia Biriukova was born in either St. Petersburg or Vladivostok on either February or October 21st. She first attended art school in St. Petersburg at the age of 22. In 1920 her family moved to Hong Kong, and in 1922 settled in Rome. Biriukova continued her art studies at the Royal Academy of Art in London, and in 1929 moved to Toronto at the same time as the stock market crashed. Her sister Alexandra Biriukova, an architect, moved to Toronto the same year. Biriukova worked at the Central Technical School and later at Upper Canada College, where she taught for twenty-one years, and where a gallery was dedicated to her in 1968. Biriukova is well known for her portrait work and painted portraits of A.Y. Jackson, J.E.H. MacDonald and Bess Harris, amongst others.
