- Phyllis Hipwell Janes was born at Alliston, Ontario in 1905. She received a B.A. from the University of Toronto and then studied two years at the Ontario College of Art under Arthur Lismer and A.Y. Jackson. In 1950 she held an exhibition of her chalk drawings at the Picture Loan Society. Janes’ subjects included children, street scenes and barnyard life. She became a member of the Canadian Society of Graphic Art in 1952 and joined the Ontario Society of Artists in 1958. Her work was exhibited at the Royal Canadian Academy, the Canadian Group of Painters, the Montreal Spring shows, the Art Gallery of Ontario, at Victoria College and elsewhere. Her work is represented in private and public collections across Canada.
