Who we are:
The Canadian Women Artists History Initiative is a newly founded collaborative endeavour that brings resources and researchers together to enhance scholarship on historical women artists in Canada.
What we do:
Based in the Department of Art History at Concordia University in Montreal, we foster and circulate research into women’s contributions to the cultural and material history of Canada. Our focus is on the period prior to 1967. We also maintain a consultable Documentation Centre and web-based research tools. We welcome participation from scholars across the country and donations of research materials, so please contact us if you are interested in becoming involved in any of our three main areas:
Research programming; events; conferences; workshops; teaching; publications.
A bio-bibliographic database of Canadian women artists born before 1925.
Files on over 750 Canadian women artists born before 1925 (1965 for architecture) and working across a broad range of media including painting and drawing, craft, photography, sculpture, illustration, design and architecture.
This website provides regularly updated information about our activities and links to our databases. You will also find on this site conference information, details about our research group, and information about our Documentation Centre. If you have any questions or suggestions we’d be delighted to hear from you.
