Biography synopsis
Jeanne Auclair (Mme Jeanne Courtemanche-Auclair) studied at the École Supérieure Ste-Croix from 1939 to 1942, and then at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal from 1942 to 1947. She studied with Stanley Cosgrove and Alfred Pellan among others. Towards the end of the 1950s she developed an interest in mosaics; in 1956, she undertook research in Mexico where she studied antique and contemporary mosaics. On her return to Quebec, she was an apprentice of André Vau (Montréal). In 1961 she was the recipient of the first prize by the Association professionnelle des artisans du Québec (APAQ). In 1969-70, she took up tapestry work. Her most noteworthy tapestries are found in Saint-Damien of Brandon Church, the Montreal Seminary, and the Mount Royal Hotel in Montreal. Besides this extensive body of works, she is also recognized for the production of the well-known puppets "Pépinot et Capucine" commissioned by the French CBC television network. Throughout her career, she participated in numerous group exhibitions as well as solo shows, including an exhibition at the Musée des maîtres et artisans in Québec City in 2008. Her work is held in a number of public and private collections in Canada, the United States, Europe, South Africa and Saudi Arabia.
