Biography synopsis
Édith Martin came from a family that specialized in producing liturgical vestments. She learned traditional Quebec weaving techniques directly from her family, including her sister who attended a technical school. Édith Martin is recognized for her choice of motifs and colors which were more modern than traditional garments. In addition to liturgical vestments, Édith Martin made clothing accessories including scarves and ties. During the 1960s she collaborated with Montreal designers Marielle Fleury et Michel Robichaud; their works were included in a few exhibitions. In 1966, she also exhibited at the Canadian Guild of Crafts in Montreal. In the latter part of the 1960s, Édith Martin produced a few murals, and in 1967 co-ordinated the creation of the theatre curtain for the Cultural Centre in Rivière-du-Loup. A number of her works are held in the collection of the Musée des maîtres et artisans du Québec, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the Musée de la civilisation à Québec.
