Biography synopsis
Steltzer grew up in Germany and moved to the United States in 1953. She was deeply affected by the lliving conditions of poor African-Americans, particularly in the Southern States, who became the subjects of her photographs The plight of minorities became a major focus of her work. In 1972 Steltzer moved to Vancouver where she photographed local First Nations artists, including Haida artist Bill Reid. Her photographs of Reid and his work, taken while he was working on the renowned piece "The Black Canoe" (1991), resulted in two publications of images. Steltzer has published numerous catalogues of her work from her travels around the world. She has had numerous exhibits in and around Vancouver and both Princeton University and the University of Victoria own collections of her works.
