Biography synopsis
Before emigrating to Canada in 1966, Almuth Lutkenhaus had already established a practice in portrait bust sculptures after studying at Werkkunstschulen Dortmund and Münster (1948-1952). On arriving in Ontario, she received a small number of commissions and also taught night classes in sculpture and life drawing at Appleby and Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology in Hamilton. She worked on a large scale which meant that many pieces had to be poured in a foundry in Hamilton, but she also poured some parts herself. Her work was figurative, commissioned for commercial, educational or religious institutions installed in public spaces. Among the religious works, she produced the installation "Stations of the Cross" for a church in Oakville while one of her most controversial works “The Crucified Woman” initially located at a Toronto United Church was relocated to Emmanuel College in 1973. She later moved to Ottawa where she worked on commercial commissions. In addition to exhibiting at McMaster University (1972), she was invited to show her works at the German Embassy in Ottawa as well as the National Arts Centre in Ottawa in 1973. She was sculptor-in-residence at the Ottawa School of Art In 1979.
