Biography synopsis
Anita Aarons was born in 1912 in Sydney, Australia and in her artistic pursuits, she engaged with several mediums including sculpture, painting, and jewelry making. Prior to her immigration to Canada in 1964, she worked as the head lecturer in sculpture at Caulfield College in Melbourne. After moving to Canada, Aarons began writing a column for the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s (later named Architecture Canada) "Allied Arts" catalogue, beginning in 1965; she covered many aspects of the relationship between the arts and architecture. As stated in Sandra Alfoldy’s book chapter, “The metaphysics of craft: Anita Aaron’s Crafts for Architecture,” Aarons was the organizer of the 1967 Crafts for Architecture exhibition at the University of Toronto’s School of Architecture. The show was highly successful and displayed her ability to explore new conceptual ideas in the world of architectural craft and solidified her position as a central figure in Toronto’s artistic milieu. Aarons concluded her writings for the "Allied Arts" column in 1969 and later returned to Australia in 1984 where she remained until her death in 2000.
