In 1928 Groves traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark where she continued her art studies. In 1936 she returned to the Art Association of Montreal to study with Lilias Torrance Newton. In addition to her studies in art, Groves graduated from McGill University with a B.A. in 1933 and an M.A. in 1935 in Modern Languages. In 1936 Groves traveled through Europe with A.Y. Jackson; she published an account entitled "Two Jacksons Abroad" in 2000. In 1950 Groves earned her doctorate from Harvard University; her dissertation focused on the German sculptor and writer Ernst Barlach. From 1942-43 Groves acted as Assistant Director of the National Gallery of Canada, and in 1951 she joined McMaster University as an Assistant Professor of Fine Arts.
