Marie Guest (nee Hewson) studied as a young woman at various art schools in Canada, Britain, and the United States. She initially attended Mount Allison College from 1895-1896, and then traveled through Europe before returning to the college. She later took courses in watercolour and crafts in Boston and New York. In 1913, she studied in London and spent a summer sketching in Brittany, Belgium and Holland. Between 1914 and 1916 she attended art classes in Provincetown, Massachusetts where she also exhibited. In 1917 she was enrolled at Columbia Teachers’ College in New York, and also studied in Florida. Between 1913 and 1918, her work was accepted for Royal Canadian Academy annual exhibitions, the Ontario Society of Artists exhibitions, and at the Manitoba Society of Artists. Guest taught crafts for the Women's Art Association (Ottawa) in 1918; she gave craft and painting courses at Mount Allison College from 1917 to 1919. In 1919 she married and moved to Winnipeg where she continued to paint while raising a family. She participated in a number of Winnipeg exhibitions from the 1930s onward.
