- Bertha May Ingle (also known as Maylaw, reasons unknown) grew up in Owen Sound, Ontario. Although little is known about her early art training, in 1895 she did win prizes for her art at a local fair. In 1901 she moved to Toronto where she studied with Farquhar McGillivray Knowles and eventually became an Associate of the Knowles Studio. She focused on landscapes and portraits in her drawings and paintings, and also produced commercial illustrations. A private exhibition of her paintings was held in December 1906 at the Margaret Eaton School of Literature and Expression. While at the Knowles Studio, she taught briefly at the Westbourne School for Girls. In 1908-1909 she was resident art teacher at the Ontario Ladies’ College in Whitby, Ontario, and again from 1922 to 1927. Her work was shown at the Royal Canadian Academy Annual Exhibitions (1909, 1910). In March 1910 she also exhibited in the Annual Exhibition of the Ontario Society of Artists. Ingle donated two landscape paintings to the William Perkins Bull Collection, compiled and exhibited in the early 1930s as a tribute to the history of Peel County. In 2015 her work was exhibited at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery and Roxy Theatre's Griffin Gallery in Owen Sound. Two self-portraits were included in "The Artist Herself: Self-Portraits by Canadian Historical Women Artists" exhibition which toured various Canadian galleries. Many of her works are held in the collections of family members while others are found in a few public collections.
