Notice biographique
Frances Anne Johnston, daughter of Group of Seven artist Franz Johnston, attended the Ontario College of Art where she won two scholarships. In 1932 she exhibited at the Royal Canadian Academy annual exhibition in Toronto, at the same time her father's work was shown. Initially landscapes were the focus of her paintings but Johnston abandoned this subject for flower paintings, still life, and interior spaces beginning in 1937 when she had children with her artist husband George Arbuckle. For many years she was known for her Christmas cards and much later did a series of Canadian wild flower studies for Toronto's Murray's Restaurants menus. From 1941-1958 she lived in Montreal as her husband worked there. They returned to Toronto in the 1960s. Johnston exhibited at the Roberts Gallery (Toronto) and also participated in all-women's exhibitions. Her work was included at the Ontario Society of Artists' 100 year anniversary exhibition in 1972. In 2022 the Ottawa Art Gallery held a retrospective solo exhibition of her flower and interior scenes. Her paintings are held at the National Gallery of Canada and in numerous corporate collections.
