Notice biographique
Though born in Toronto, Henrietta Shore is remembered primarily as a Californian artist, where she became known for her semi-abstract, symbolic depictions of landscape, shells, and plants. Widely admired before the Second World War, Shore was considered to be the equal of Georgia O'Keefe, and became close friends with modernist photographer Edward Weston. The youngest of seven children, Shore's mother encouraged her early artistic ambition, and enrolled her in the classes offered by Laura Muntz, under whom she painted dark-toned genre works. In 1900, Shore began spending more time south of the border, attending the Art Students League of New York; she studied under William Merritt Chase until 1902, when Robert Henri became her teacher. Before 1912, Shore travelled to London, where she enrolled at the Heatherley Art School, and to Haarlem, Holland, where she continued to study painting. Despite numerous invitations from the Canadian government to participate in international exhibitions, Shore emigrated to California in 1913, moved to New York in 1920, and became an American citizen in 1921. In the late 1920s, she returned to Los Angeles and, in 1930, settled in the Mount Carmel artist colony on the Californian coast. Though she received a commission from the Treasury Relief Project to paint six murals in post offices (1936-37) and taught, Shore knew considerable poverty during the last decades of her life. After 1933, she exhibited rarely, and became religious. In the late 1950s, for unknown reasons, she was committed to a psychiatric hospital. Group exhibitions include several in Southern California (from 1914) and the Pan-Pacific Exposition, San Diego (in 1915, for which she won a medal). She also exhibited abroad, in Paris, London, and Liverpool. Shore held solo shows at the Los Angeles Museum (1914, 1917, 1927), the Kraushaar Gallery, New York (1920), the Worcester Art Museum, Massachusetts (1923), and the Georgette Passedoit Gallery, New York (1939).
