- Born Harriot Georgina Rowan Hamilton, Lady Dufferin married in 1862. When her husband Lord Dufferin was appointed Governor General in 1872, Lady Dufferin accompanied him to Canada for four years. In 1876 they visited British Columbia where Dufferin painted totem poles, homes and canoes at Skidgate, Metlakatla and other places along the coast. During a time of controversy surrounding the building of the Canada Pacific Railway, Lady Dufferin documented her experiences with writing and pictures. Following their time in Canada, the Dufferin's diplomatic postings included Russia, Turkey, Egypt, Rome and Paris.
