Notice biographique
A versatile artist and inspiring teacher, Marjorie Hughson Tozer studied under Arthur Lismer at Halifax's Victoria School of Art and Design, where she was considered to be one of his most promising students. In the summer of 1924, while still a post-graduate student, Tozer moved to Toronto to teach at the Ontario College of Art and Design's Teachers' Summer Courses in Art alongside Lismer. She later returned to Halifax and became an instructor at her alma mater, and a member of the Nova Scotia Society of Artists. Eventually, she accepted a job as a mural decorator in Eaton's and Simpsons' deparment stores, and left Nova Scotia for Montreal. Tozer was sketching partners with Marion Bond, and completed the illustrations for Claire Harris MacIntosh's "Attune with Spring in Acadie." On her marriage to James Leefe, the artist moved to Radlett, a village in England, where she continued to teach (at St. Margarets, a small girls' school) and exhibit, occasionally with the Royal Academy.
