Notice biographique
Manning grew up on Vancouver Island before her family moved to Amherstburg Ontario. She attended the Ontario College of Art where she studied drawing and painting under John Alfsen, graduating in 1945. She gave up painting while raising her children, and in 1960 she returned to the College to study printmaking. Manning is recognized as one of Canada's foremost etchers. Beginning in 1965 she taught at: Ontario Department of Education's Youth and Recreation Division; Sheridan College (1971-73); Dundas Valley School of Art; Centennial College; Elliot Lake Centre for Continuing Education; and Artists' Workshop. She held her first solo show in 1965 at the Pollock Gallery, Toronto, and in 1968 had a show at the University of Waterloo. Manning's work has also been included in many group shows in North America, Europe and Australia. In 1974 she participated in an all-women show at the Wells Gallery with Fran Jones and Jane Beecroft. Manning was active in a number of associations and a founding member of the Print and Drawing Council of Canada. She won many important awards for her etchings in Canada and abroad. In 1980 she became ill from exposure to acids, solvents and photoresists while teaching, and turned to drawing in ink, and painting.
