Notice biographique
During the twelve years Francoise Andre spent in Canada beginning in 1951, she and artist husband Stegeman lived in Vancouver where they became active members of the artistic community. She taught painting at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and the Banff School of Fine Arts summer schools. Andre had studied art at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, the Roger Institut voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp, and the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. Although she had received a formal approach during her studies, she was influenced by the abstraction in the spirituality of Morris Graves and “mystic painter” Mark Tobey in North America. The human figure was always central to her painting, often described as surrealistic. In 1963, she accompanied her husband to Chicago, where he taught at the Art Institute before taking up residence in Philadelphia in 1969. Andre continued her practice in Pennsylvania until 1976, when she divorced. She eventually moved back to Brussels but continued to return to Philadelphia. She exhibited in numerous Canadian museums and galleries; her work is held at Vancouver Art Gallery, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Princeton University Museum, Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique among others.
