HALE, Elizabeth Frances Amherst

Naissance
Walcot, England, 1774
Décès
Quebec City, Quebec, 1826
Notice biographique
Elizabeth Hale accompanied her husband, deputy paymaster general of British troops, to Quebec City in 1799. Like many British women at this time she had learned to paint from a Picturesque point of view. Her drawings and watercolours focused on urban and rural landscapes including the seigneury in Ste. Anne de la Perade which the Hales owned. Among the watercolor and drawing works held by Archives Canada, she filled a small sketchbook with representations of the siegneury. A watercolour depicting York (Toronto) points to her copy work as she had not visited this location. A few of her later watercolours are in the collection of the Musee national du Quebec.
