Notice biographique
Suzanne Bergeron entered the École des Beaux-arts de Québec, studying with Jean Paul Lemieux among others in the early 1950s. In 1955, she had her first solo exhibition at the Agnès Lefort Gallery in Montreal and also won first prize for painting at the Concours artistiques de la province which allowed her to travel to Paris where she attended the École du Louvre. She received the Prix de la Ville de Paris from the City of Paris in 1956, and exhibited in the International Exhibition of Paintings at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. The Marcel Bernheim Gallery in Paris exhibited her work in a solo show which included semi-abstract works of nature and landscapes. When she returned to Canada in 1958 she was accorded a bursary from the Royal Society of Canada. From the end of the 1950s, Bergeron participated in several group exhibitions in Canada, including at the Art Gallery of Ontario in 1958, and internationally at Biennale of São Paulo (1959), NYC (1959); Mexican Biennale (1960); as well as shows in London, Amsterdam, Brussels. In 1963 she participated in the Canadian Biennial and also returned to Paris on a Canada Council Grant, spending four years in France. After a retrospective exhibition at the Musée du Québec in 1974, she became unable to paint due to health problems. Her work is held at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the National Gallery of Canada. In 2009 her work was included in an exhibition of Quebec women artists entitled “La conquete de l’espace 1900-1965” at the Musée national du Quebec.
