Notice biographique
After completing studies at the Musee des Beaux Arts in Montreal with Alfred Pellan in the early 1950s, Monique Voyer received a painting prize which she used to attend l’École nationale supérieure des Beaux-arts de Paris. On returning to Montreal, she worked in the Costumes department at Radio Canada (1955-1956) while continuing her art practice. Initially her paintings were figurative, but in the 1960s she began to work in abstraction; her atmospheric paintings and strong use of color sometimes included materials such as sand. During the 1980s, she focused on the eau-forte technique in printmaking. In addition to creating prints, she co-published a number of artists books with writer Marcel Fortin. She participated in exhibitions at the Musée des Beaux-arts de Montréal in 1956-1957; her work was also included in international exhibitions in France, Spain and Taiwan (1955-1959). Throughout the 1960s she exhibited at the Agnès Lefort Gallery (Montreal), with the Colour and Form Society (Toronto) in 1957, and had a solo exhibition at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal in 1966. At the beginning of the 1970s, Voyer began teaching at the college level in Montreal, eventually returning to Magog where she was an instructor until 1993. A retrospective of her work was held at the Musée de Sherbrooke in 1994. In addition to painting and print works, she produced two relief murals as part of the integration of art into architecture Quebec policy in 1991-92. In 2010 her solo exhibition "Parcours imaginaires" was held in Sherbrooke. Her works are held at the Musee nationale du Quebec, and a large collection of prints can be seen at the Bibliotheque et Archives nationales du Quebec.
