Notice biographique
Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, Marchioness of Lorne was the sixth of nine children born to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. As a young girl she was tutored in art by Edward Corbould and studied with sculptor Mary Thornycroft as well as at the National Art Training School. In 1871, Princess Louise married John Campbell, the Marquess of Lorne. In 1878 he became Canada’s Governor General and Louise became the Viceregal Consort to Canada. The couple resided in Ottawa until 1884, visiting western provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. In 1880, they founded the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts which included an accompanying gallery that later became the National Gallery of Canada in 1882. Princess Louise encouraged women artists by visiting exhibits showcasing women and collecting works by Canadian women artists. Her own artistic production include sculptures of Queen Victoria located at McGill University and Kensington Palace while other works are held at the National Gallery of Canada, McGill University, Library and Archives Canada, Kensington Palace, and The British Museum.
