Décès
Toronto, Ontario?, 1986
Notice biographique
A potter, sculptor, and painter in both oils and watercolours, Mary Florence Black began her training at the Toronto Art School in the early 1900s. Black then went to Paris and studied painting at the Academie Julian and under Edwin Scott, an American artist. During her time in Paris she exhibited twice in the Salon des Artistes Francais and once in the Salon des Beaux-Arts. Black eventually returned to Canada and continued her artistic activities. While painting remained her principal medium she was also a sculptor, and often chose to work with religious subject matter in that medium. Despite her extensive training and versatility, Black remained largely unknown, perhaps due to her refusal to sell her work.
