Notice biographique
Barbara Roe Hicklin (née Barbara Jane Roe) attended the Central Technical School and the Ontario College of Art in Toronto in the late 1930s. She later moved to New York and worked as a commercial artist, illustrating books, magazines and newspapers while attending the Phoenix School of Design, graduating in 1946. Hicklin also worked as a set designer for theatres in Sarnia between 1951-1956. She moved to Edmonton in the late 1950s and became an active member of the Alberta Society of Artists; she became the first woman president of the society in 1975. During the mid-1970s Hicklin toured Canada in her van ("Van Go"), painting landscapes; in the 1980s she travelled through the Yukon. Often working from photographs, she usually worked with watercolours, but also worked in acrylic and pen and ink. Hicklin's work has been shown in numerous group shows with the Alberta Society of Artists and the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour. Her solo exhibitions have been held in Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario. Examples of her work can be found in various collections including the Alberta Art Foundation and the Visual Arts Branch of the Government of Alberta.
