- Notice biographique
- Madge Smith was born in England and immigrated to Fredericton while still very young. In 1930 she began working for Frank Pridham at Harvey Studios, a commercial portrait studio in Fredericton. In 1936 Smith opened a store on Queen Street in Fredericton where she sold a variety of crafts and represented numerous important Canadian artists including Miller Brittain, Jack Humphrey, and Pegi Nicol MacLeod. Smith became close with many of the artists, and her shop was an important venue for Maritime Art Association events. Along with her commercial business, Smith photographed life around the city, documenting many of the important events of 1930s Fredericton. Her photographs were included in the 1974 exhibit "Fredericton - The Early Years" and both the National Gallery of Canada and the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick own many of her works.
