- Notice biographique
- Natalie Salkauskis Liacas fled to Germany with her family (1945-49) and immigrated to Canada in 1949. With a B.Arch. (1960) from the University of Toronto, she worked in the Toronto architectural firms of Gilleland and Janiss (1960-61), Pentland and Baker (1961-63), and Eero Saarinen and Associates in Connecticut (1963-65). Returning to Toronto Liacas worked for the architectural offices of Raymond Moriyama (1965-67), and Shore and Moffat (1967-69) before joining the Design Services Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Government Services (1969-94). Throughout her career her drawing talent equipped her to work on design teams. In 1959 she was the first female student to receive an award from the OAA, and also won the Colonna of Canada Ltd Prize in 1957-58. Her design projects for the government included the Staff Development Centre, Barrie (1970); Ontario Camp Leadership Centre, Haliburton (1972); Veterinary Laboratory; Daycare Centres; Ontario Pavilion, International Garden and Greenery, the provincial entry for Expo 90 in Osaka; and Travel Centres for the Ontario Ministry of Tourism. The design prototype of the Centres was modified for different locations, but unified by a common visual identity. Following retirement from the government, Liacas worked as a planning and design consultant. (I. Puchalski)
