Notice biographique
Upon attaining a B.Arch. from the University of Toronto (1938) and practical experience with the Ontario Department of Public Works, 1937-1939, Ann Gauthier Malott became the first woman hired in the architectural department at Rockefeller Center, New York. Malott developed the layout and interior designs for the upper eleven floors of the U.S. Rubber Company from 1939-1940. She returned to Toronto in 1940 and began working in the office of John M. Lyle, Architect from 1940-1942. The projects included two buildings devoted to wartime munitions production at the General Electric Company in Peterborough. There Malott worked on details for the installation of gunboring mills and lathes. In the years 1943-1946, following her marriage to Lieutenant Bart Malott, she went on to work in the design office of the Federal Inspection Board, Ottawa. Subsequent to the family move to Montreal in 1953, Malott became involved in housing through her community work. Seeing a need to support the redevelopment of slums in Montreal, she became Chair of the Committee on Housing and Community Planning, Montreal Council of Women from 1957-1961, acting as technical advisor to the President. This work led to the Jeanne Mance public housing project of 1958. As Chair, Malott authored the National Council of Women's brief submitted to the RAIC Committee of Inquiry into the Design of the Residential Environment (1960). They recommended improvements in planning, design, funding and research of public housing. From 1959 to 1963 Malott was an active member of the Canadian Housing Design Council (including Regional Judge for Quebec for 1959) which is dedicated to improving the design of housing in Canada.
